Rabid coyote attacks humans in New York
    Toronto Telegraph
    Thursday 9th September, 2010

A coyote which bit humans in New York City has been tested positive for rabies.

The animal, which was shot by a policeman after a rash of attacks on humans in the suburb of Rye Brook, had attacked a baby, her father and a teenager on Sunday.

In June, two children were attacked by coyotes in a neighboring suburb, about 30 miles northeast of Manhattan.

The Westchester County Health Department said the people bitten on the weekend by the coyote were immediately treated for rabies, which can be spread to humans in an animal’s saliva and is highly dangerous if untreated.

Rabies causes acute inflammation of the brain in humans and is almost invariably fatal if treatment is not administered prior to the onset of severe symptoms.
